Updates in the desktop apps
The VNClagoon desktop apps — VNCchat, VNCchannels, VNCtask and the other products that ship a desktop build — keep themselves up to date. You never replace files by hand, and a new version is never installed without asking.
When the app looks for a new version
Section titled “When the app looks for a new version”Each desktop app checks for a new build when it starts, every hour while it runs, and again when you bring the window to the front or wake the computer (that last check is limited to once every ten minutes, so a busy day does not hammer the download server). You are offered a release shortly after it is published, even if the app has been open for days.
If a check fails — the download server is unreachable, for example — the app tells you rather than staying silent.
When a new version is available
Section titled “When a new version is available”The app shows a prompt with the version you are on and the version that is ready, and three choices:
- Download & install — fetches the build; when it finishes the app offers Restart now, or it installs the next time you quit.
- Later — you are asked once per version, so the same release does not nag you. If your organization’s build downloads in the background, it installs when you next quit.
- Open download page — opens your organization’s Clients page in the VNClagoon portal, for a machine that cannot reach the download server.
If the window is not in front of you, you also get an operating-system notification.
Check and install by hand
Section titled “Check and install by hand”Each app has a place that shows the update state live — checking, up to date (with the version), downloading (with a percentage), ready to install, or an error with the reason. There you can select Check for updates to ask the download server now, and Install and restart once a build is ready.
- VNCchat — the settings drawer, Software updates.
- VNCchannels — the Software updates button in the top bar (desktop build only).
- VNCtask — Settings → Software updates (desktop build only).
The other apps show the prompt and the restart offer; their manual entry is listed in the product’s own desktop-app page. In the web app an update entry, where it appears, says that updates are only available in the installed app — the browser version is always the current one.
